Interschools Snowsports: Where Skiing & Snowboarding Rule

Interschools Snowsports: Where Skiing & Snowboarding Rule

The NSW Interschools Snowsports Championship season is in full swing at Perisher. Interschools is a series of snowsports competitions divided into different states of Australia, where competitors represent schools within each state and region in different age groups and seven discipline events.

Competitors lunge along hills and paths in the Cross Country events and whoosh downhill at great speed dodging markers for the Giant Snowboard Slalom and Alpine events. You’ll see skiers pulling up their knees in the bump & jumps Mogul events or zipping down as fast as they can on their snowboards or skis to get the best time in the Skiercross or Snowboard Cross.

While helmets as a safety measure may have eliminated the ‘wind in their hair’, the sentiment of fun is always present in snowsports competitions. Adverse weather conditions dampen ski gloves rather than dampen spirits and fuel a roaring trade in hot chocolates all over the resort.

When competitors in the Interschools Snowsports Championships are not having the time of their lives representing their school they are worn out, as everyone should be after a great day in the snow. In previous weeks the weather has been windy and bracing but competitors braved these challenging elements, wearing their school colours with pride.

In September Perisher is hosting an invitational cross country camp (September 7th) at Perisher Nordic Centre for those identified as having talent. The camp will focus on ski techniques and other on-ski training. The cost will be $55 and competitors need to make their own way to and from the venue.

Also in September competitors will vie for places at the Australian Championships held from September 10 to 14th at Perisher Resort. Start lists are available from the Interschools Snowsports website. Jump online now and see whether you qualify.
